IEC 60331 3----- Tests for electric cables under fire conditions – Circuit integrity

This test is carried out to verify circuit integrity even during a fire. A sample of cable is held horizontally over a ribbon flame at about 750 °C. A test voltage is applied continuously for a period of a minimum of 90 minutes to the cable and no break or short circuit should occur in the cable.

Cables form a complex matrix in every building, traversing walls and ceilings to create a web of electrical power. Unfortunately, these cables also act as conduits for fire and heat, so cables must be fashioned of inflammable and self-extinguishing components.

This flame test evaluates the non-propagation of fire of a bunch of cables.
