Can you see thick dense weed?
The second and more common approach is to get out your marker rod and feel around the lakebed with a lead. Try to find the low-lying silkweed which would be a great place to position a rod.

As I mentioned these spots will be crawling with natural food for the carp and more importantly carp will be close by. I would even try to bring some of the weed in and have a good look at the type of weed you are dealing with. Also keep an eye out for clear spots, which will indicate where the carp have been feeding previously.

When you do find these interesting spots, whether they are light weed, clear or even denser weed, make sure you clip your rods up to ensure you hit the same point each time you cast.

There are a few types of weed to look out for.

Silkweed as shown in the image - this is a light blanket weed that contains lots of natural food that the carp love to feed on. Great to fish on or around if the weed is low lying.

Candian pondweed - a very thick, strong and dense type of weed. You know when you get hooked up in this stuff and to be honest, something I would stay away from.

Milfoil - again very dense and heavy weed much like the Canadian pondweed.

Carp rigs for weedy bottoms

So you have decided to fish a weedy lake and found some clear spots and some light weed which you want to fish on. So which rig do you choose?

If you are carp fishing in silkweed that is fairly light I normally fish a critically balanced hook bait that will sink slowly through the water and just sit on top of this light weed bed, perfectly positioned for that big carp to bite.

Alternatively, you could use a very popular big carp rig known as the chod rig. This carp rig will sit perfectly on light weed due to the construction. The carp rig uses a pop-up boilie that runs freely alongside a leadcore leader, great for this scenario.

On the clearer spots, I would opt for a simple bottom bait carp rig, keep things as simple as possible would be my best tip here.

If you are going to fish on more heavy or dense weed I would suggest a solid PVA bag that will protect the hook and sit nicely on the weed beds. I would use pellets and broken up boilies to really get the carp rummaging through the weed.

Something to bear in mind, if you do get a take make sure you are very quick to respond and try your best to clear the thick weed as soon as possible. Hopefully, you have taken my previous advice and adopted a carp rig that can easily drop the lead.

If you do find the carp has managed to get caught up in the weed, just keep the rod high and make sure the pressure is constant and if you are lucky the fish will eventually free itself.

For centuries, carp, and particularly carp fishing, has enthralled and captivated anglers throughout Europe and Asia. From the supernatural beasts lurking in holiday lakes across France and Thailand, to the mystical enigmas, residing within the mecca of carp fishing that is Redmires. Their wily intelligence and, at times, infuriating elusiveness, drives carp fishermen to consistently return to their favourite waters in search of a new PB. Their ability to grow to great sizes and provide swashbuckling fights makes them an extremely rewarding fish to catch. Carp have often been described as ‘the queen of rivers and lakes’ due to their majestic movement and subtle demeanour.

It is believed that the common carp was first introduced into UK freshwaters during the 12th century. They would traditionally be kept in stew ponds, ready to be eaten by monastic monks up until the 16th century. It wasn’t until the introduction of the selectively bred ‘Mirror Carp’ from Holland and Germany, in the 18th century, that the popularity of carp in the UK shifted from a food source to a sport.

Thomas Ford, owner of Manor fisheries, was the man who initially imported these carp into the UK for angling purposes. It was at this point that the most popular fishing industry in the UK was born. These fish were big, often over 10lbs, dwarfing the typical 4oz roach and perch which were common catches at the time. Not only this, but they were purposefully hard to catch and so immediately gained a mysterious and mythical reputation. The baton was then passed onto Donald Leany, who went on to import hundreds of thousands of carp into the UK. Some were lost to unsuitable habitat and predation; however some went onto stock some of the most famous fisheries in the UK, including Redmires and Frensham.

This trait was selectively bred into them by the fishery owners and allowed the fish to grow to unimaginable sizes, subject to their environmental conditions and access to food.

This mass importation of carp from the continent is the reason for the huge range in shapes and sizes that we see today in the UK carp population as imports from different regions came with different, unique traits. Dutch imports had the ability to sustain bone growth for much longer, this trait was selectively bred into them by the fishery owners and allowed the fish to grow to unimaginable sizes, subject to their environmental conditions and access to food. These Dutch imports are the prime reason behind Redmires producing three record fish in succession and dominating the big carp game for nearly thirty years.

In comparison, fish imported from Italy could reach impressive weights, but were not able to grow as long as the Dutch carp. Somewhat limited by their comparatively short bodies and bone structure, these fish were extremely rotund, often being nearly as deep as they were long. Nowadays however, there is no need for imported carp, as many fisheries are producing beautiful home-grown carp.

Richard Walker is widely regarded as the godfather of carp fishing. He fell in love with carp fishing and immersing himself in the nature that accompanies it during his youth. However, just as Walker did for a whole generation of carp fishermen throughout the 20th century, he himself was influenced into getting those carp fishing juices flowing. It was Denys Watkins-Pitchford aka ‘B.B’, who managed to infect Walker with the life-changing bug for nature and carp.

A young Walker received a fisherman’s bedside book as a gift for Christmas in 1950. The book told tales of record carp and elusive beasts, so shrewd and wily that they could never be caught. Walker wrote to BB, suggesting that he did not in fact find carp all that difficult to catch and that he had developed a few techniques which provided him with a significant advantage. This letter spawned (pardon the pun) a fruitful friendship.

The ideas and techniques devised by Walker were so well formulated that the general approach to carp fishing and the equipment used did not change a great deal for decades.

At this point, Walker had caught more 10lb carp than anyone else (rumoured to be 80+), at a time when most anglers had never even laid eyes on a 10lb carp in the water, let alone land one. Walker and his associates went on to form one of the most influential angling organisations in British history, known as the Carp Catchers Club. This club shared information on baits, tackle, carp habits, times to fish etc.

To say that Walker was a thought leader would be an understatement. His contribution of original ideas to the Carp Catchers Club and the wider carp community had a phenomenal impact and paved the way for the huge amounts of carp literature that exists today, including articles such as this one. The ideas and techniques devised by Walker were so well formulated that the general approach to carp fishing and the equipment used did not change a great deal for decades. Only in the last 10-20 years have the baits and tackle seen a significant change.

The UK and European carp fishing industries have come a long way since then. With the introduction of carp fishing magazines in the 80s through to the hugely influential figures of, initially Danny Fairbrass, when he founded Korda (the biggest carp fishing company in the UK) and then later on with the involvement of Ali Hamidi, who brought carp fishing to mainstream television audiences on Sky Sports, with shows such as Thinking Tackle and Carp Academy.

It is safe to say that carp fishing is no longer a sport just for the older generation. Korda also utilised innovative underwater filming technology which brought anglers a new insight into the ever changing and modernising techniques and approaches being pioneered by fishing professionals. These new media platforms facilitated the rise of some carp anglers to celebrity status whilst also providing significant investment in the sport, leading to advancements and adaptations of various baits, rods, reels and rigs, along with the development of a plethora of other gadgets and gizmos, all designed to give the angler an edge against these tricky old customers. Techniques such as bait boats, hair rigs and spods are like here to Mars compared to the techniques forged by Walker and the Carp Catchers Club.

When I first started carp fishing many years ago, I would often forget vital pieces of equipment that I really needed. I’m not talking about the obvious carp gear like fishing rods, reels, carp bait etc but other items you may not consider.

This article is a carp fishing essentials lists including items you may forget, these items are what I would group in a basic carp fishing setup of which I forgot when I first started carp fishing.

Use this article on the top 20 carp fishing essentials list, to ensure you don’t get caught out on your next session. These items could be used as a carp fishing checklist on top of the more obvious items.

1. Kettle

A must have on any carp fishing checklist!

Whenever I am carp fishing in cold weather, a lovely hot cup of tea really hits the spot and gets me through the cold conditions.

Don’t forget your teabags, coffee, sugar, milk, mug etc.

Kettles and stoves run off of gas and so always check the levels of the canister before you set off.

2. Suntan lotion

I have lost count of the numbers of occasions where I have got home from a carp fishing trip only to find I look like a tomato from the sunburn!

I always carry suntan lotion even on cloudier days to ensure I don’t get burnt and something I feel should be included on any carp fishing checklist!

3. Boots

When I first started carp fishing I would normally wear a pair of old trainers and quite often found myself traipsing through mud and ending up in a right mess.

I invested in a pair of decent waterproof boots and it was money well spent. Boots for me are now a top item in a basic carp fishing setup.

4. Umbrella

I remember carp fishing on Bluebell Lakes in Peterborough and the heavens opened, I got out the fishing umbrella that I picked up for a very reasonable price and thought that would be that. But sadly I was mistaken! This cheap umbrella started leaking and I ended up completely soaked, moral of the story is buy a decent fishing umbrella and avoid ending up in a situation like myself.

5. Waterproofs

This follows on from the fishing umbrella and is another item I would include in a basic carp fishing setup, I would often wear joggers and a hoody which is OK for good weather but when the rain starts to come down, waterproofs were necessary.

If you are playing a fish you can’t stay under your umbrella and so investing in some waterproofs is definitely worth it, in my opinion.

I also like to bring a spare set of clothes just in case.

6. Polarized Sunglasses

A pair of polarized sunglasses have two benefits, the first obvious one is to protect your eyes from the sun which I find is often stronger when reflecting off the lake water.

The second benefit is polarized sunglasses actually help you see through the water and spot any carp that could be in the margins. If you have never tried this, you’ll be amazed the difference it makes.

Perhaps not a must have carp fishing gear item for everyone, but for me, a decent pair of polarized sunglasses is very important.

7. Hat

Another one for when the sun is shining, a hat will keep the sun off your head and hopefully stop you getting sunburn. Cheap and doesn't take up much room in your tackle bag.

8. Battery power brick

When the carp aren’t taking your bait, I often spend time on some app on my phone which drains the battery. Having a power brick enables me to charge my phone several times when the battery gets low.

9. Book

Having a decent book in your tackle bag is another one to pass the time when you aren’t catching carp. I can manage to get through a book or two on a carp session.

10. Assortment of tackle

If someone asked me what equipment do I need for carp fishing? I would always recommend having several options when carp fishing.

This is a must for when you’re struggling to get bites. I will have a variety of end tackle that allows me to fish different methods. For example, I will carry end tackle to fish a zig rig, chod rig (pop-up boilie), PVA bags to cast to showing carp etc. The most important point here is to give yourself options when you are not catching carp and should be very high on any carp fishing checklist.

11. Camera

If I manage to catch a carp or two, I like to carry a decent camera to ensure I get a quality picture.

12. First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is often overlooked by many anglers and is very important in regards to safety and should be included in any basic carp fishing setup.

I remember on one occasion I managed to prick myself with a barbed hook completely through my hand and having a first aid kit was vital to ensure I cleaned the wound and could enjoy the rest of my session.

I also ensure I carry paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets in my first aid kit.

13. Weighing Scales

In the early days when I started fishing, I forgot to bring a set of weighing scales and this only became apparent when I landed a carp and realized this!

14. Knife

A good knife in your tackle box is a given in any basic carp fishing setup and can be used for a variety of different applications, from cutting up bait to finishing off a carp rig.

15. Rod Licence

Another one that many anglers can easily forget and high on any carp fishing essentials list. Everyone fishing must have a rod licence.

As carp anglers, we tend to carry multiple types of carp bait and I often found myself lacking bait boxes to keep everything in. A bait box is cheap so I now carry several in my tackle bag allowing me to add different bait flavour enhancers to my boilies or other bait I may be using.

17. Disinfectant wipes

As a carp angler, I’m constantly handling carp bait, lake water and hopefully a carp or two. All of these actions require me to clean my hands afterwards, so I carry a pack of disinfectant wipes to ensure I stay hygienic during my session.

18. Plenty of food and water

Over a session, I can get through a surprising amount of food and especially water, make sure you carry too much than not enough.

It could also be worth checking if the venue has a cafe or any local takeaways delivery.

19. Carp Care Kit

Many venues now require you to carry a carp care kit to treat any wounds or injuries you spot when landing a carp. These kits are inexpensive and are generally a good idea to ensure the carp are cared for in the best possible way. A good item to add to your carp fishing checklist.

20. Spares Batteries

Any easy item to overlook, so add this to your carp fishing essentials list. Many carp bite alarms run off very specific batteries and I like to carry some spares in my tackle bag just in case.

For many carp anglers, fishing over a bed of spod mix is a tried and tested method for catching carp.

Once you have a number of carp feeding you can have a fantastic session and land multiple fish and hopefully land a big carp as well.

This big carp spod mix will attract carp of all shapes and sizes and get them into a feeding frenzy. I tend to find this feeding frenzy attracts the big carp that sit back and observe what is going on. When there are many carp feeding, this grabs the attention of the big carp who move in and will also start to feed.

Once you have the carp feeding you must ensure you keep the big carp spod mix topped up. Big carp are this size for a reason, they eat a lot of food!

One very important point do not put out too much bait at the start of your session. I see this all too often which is a huge mistake. Put a few spods of bait and see what happens. If you start to get the carp feeding, then add more.

In order for this method to work to its full potential, you need to have a big carp spod mix that is irresistible to any carp.

The big carp spod mix recipe in this article has been used over and over again with excellent results landing multiple carp and is one you must try for yourself.

1. Hemp Seed Self Prepared

Ideally, you will prepare your own hemp before the session which will save you a huge amount of money and provide you with an end product you know is of the highest quality.

Grab a 20kg bag of hemp from your local animal feed shop for around £19.99. Many pre-prepared products charge over £10 for a fraction of this amount so a little bit of extra effort here is totally worth it.

2. How to prepare hemp

Take a few kilos of hemp, depending on how long your session is.
Soak the hemp overnight in water using a large bait container with a ratio of 5:1 water to hemp.
The following day, add the mixture to a large cooking pot and bring this to the boil over a stove.
Continue to cook the mixture for around 10 - 15 minutes.
After this period drop the temperature and simmer for a further 15 minutes or until the seeds just start to open.
Finally, allow the mixture to cool and you will be left with perfect fresh hemp ready to create your ultimate spod mix.
4. Whole and Chopped Boilies

Take your choice of carp boilie and chop up a few handfuls into halves. I also love using the Crusher to grind a further couple of handfuls into a finer crumb and add these into your big carp spod mix, it is such a great tool. By adding this variety of boilie you are ensuring the spod mix contains lots of different shapes and sizes to keep the carp interested.

You can also use this to your advantage and use a half boilie as your hook bait, this will blend in with the others and hopefully fool a big carp.

5. Tin of sweetcorn for colour

Add a whole tin of sweetcorn to add a touch of colour that will catch the eye of any carp. I also like to top my hook bait with an artificial piece of sweetcorn for that added attraction and to blend in with the spod mix. I have had lots of success with this approach.

6. Tin of tuna

Carp go nuts for tuna and this cheap bait is a must for any big carp spod mix. I like to add a tin with sunflower oil in the summer to add a nice oil slick in the water for some further attraction. During the winter, I like to use tuna in brine as the carp do not really need the additional nutrients of the oils as their metabolism is much slower.

7. Salt to bring out the flavour

Just like we add salt to our own food to bring out the flavour, the same rule applies for our spod mix. Add in a few tablespoons to enhance the spod mix.

8. Liquid Attractor

A liquid attractor should always be added to the big carp spod mix. Again, this will add even more flavour to lure over the carp to your swim. Always have a couple of different liquid attractors in your tackle bag.

9. Mixed Pellets

I like to add a series of mixed pellets as long as the venue does not contain too many bream. If you are not careful, you will end up catching bream rather than carp so do your research before you add any pellets.

By adding different size pellets you are allowing for a varied breakdown time which will only add longevity to your big carp spod mix, which can be perfect while you are waiting to get the carp feeding. Pellets are also naturally very oily and just like the tuna will add a nice slick in the water.

10. Chilli Powder

We all love a bit of spice right! Well most of us do, and the carp seem to go absolutely crazy for chilli powder.

Many pre-prepared hemp products contain chilli but I find this way of preparation give a better performing end product and save a lot of money. Add a couple of tablespoons to really spice up your big carp spod mix.

11. Optional Ingredients

If you plan on fishing with a maggot clip, I would add a few pints to the spod mix. This follows the same approach as adding boilies, matching the hook bait to the free offerings. Nothing will spook a carp more than your hook bait sticking out like a sore thumb.

Tigers nuts and other particles if the venue permits. Many venues ban certain particles for various reasons so do your research beforehand and adjust your big carp spod mix accordingly.

Summary

This completes are the ultimate big carp spod mix. The mix is full of flavour, colour, shapes and sizes that will attract any carp patrolling near your swim.

Remember to start off with a few spod fulls of mix and when the carp begin to feed, gradually add more. Don't fall into the mistake of adding too much bait at the start of your session.

What Everyone Needs To Know About Carp Care(2023年09月02日)

As carp anglers it is in our interests to protect the species we fish for with proper carp care, so everyone in the sport can continue to enjoy their future captures.

Many anglers, however, are unaware or ill-prepared for the first trip to France. I often see people arriving with inadequate equipment to safely handle large carp. Here then is a brief run down of what you ought to know about fish care…

1. Use Safe rigs

Seems obvious nowadays that rigs should be safe and give the fish the best chance of freeing themselves in the case of a breakage or crack off. It never ceases to amaze me when I see anglers using death rigs made up of a Steptoe & Son collection of tubing and swivels.

With all the companies making excellent rig bits there is no excuse. These items aren’t dear, will catch you more fish as they are certainly more effective than a home made job and most importantly they have been made to be as fish safe as is possible.

Please read the instructions and make sure you are using them correctly. I saw two anglers last year attaching leaders to their mainlines with swivels in conjunction with in-line leads, this quite naturally negates the safe nature of the rig.

2. Never leave your rods unattended

This is another one that really annoys me, guys wandering off down the bank to chat to their mates and leaving his rods out. Please if you have to leave your peg….Reel them in!!

Not only will you miss fish, but if a hooked carp makes a snag while you have gone walkabout it will almost certainly end in a breakage and a tethered fish.

Secondly you have a high risk of the fish going through other anglers lines and spoiling their sport. Finally you run a risk of your rods ending up in the lake, if the line jams, runs out or snags up you could lose your expensive rod and reel for good.

3. Use a big unhooking mat

Bugbear number three for me is undersized unhooking mats. Some I see would serve better as table mats. Carp and especially cats can grow big in France. Mats should be as large as you can get. Foam needs to be deep and protective. Always place them on flat, preferably grassy ground, away from the water’s edge, to avoid the fish sliding down the bank.

There are a number on the market, from the cradle type through the beany type to the inflatable ones… Which ever you chose make sure it can handle the biggest fish in the lake. When you do land that 50lb+ monster, you’ll be glad you had a big mat. Believe me big carp are expensive and need protection to prevent injury

4. Use a proper sized landing net

You’ll need a decent size landing net. Most carp nets are 42 inch or bigger these days, and this should be considered a minimum. I prefer having a 50 inch net as you can get long fish and the smaller cats (up to 40lb in them).

I would suggest you actually set up two landing nets, one each side of your peg. This way you’re not hunting for a net that is too far away when you’ve walked down the swim to play the fish. Also, if you get two fish in quick succession you’re not faced with trying to fit two carp in one net.

5. Use a good weigh sling

Another essential item is a decent weigh-sling to properly weigh your captures. The small, thin nylon ones that fold the fish in two should be thrown away in my opinion. I much prefer the recent designs with zips on the sides that all you to release the fish quickly and safely, as well as carry it across the peg with no fear of it slipping out or wriggling free. (Naturally you need to close the side zips to avoid a mishap). These slings have a plasticised coating inside to avoid removing the fishes slime, where as the nylon ones act like a cloth and get covered in the stuff..not good for the fish at all.

6. Have a bucket of water to hand

Always have a bucket or large jug of lake water next to your unhooking mat. On hot summer days, and it can get well into the 40’s in France in July and August, the mats will get dry and hot in no time.

So before placing a fish on such a mat, wet it thoroughly before hand. It is very important that they stay moist. During the manipulation for weighing and photographing, always keep them doused with water. Not only will this protect them from getting too dry, but they will look much better in the photographs too.

7. Never carry a fish in your hands to the water:

NEVER carry a fish back to the water in your arms. Not only will it be couple of feet off the deck, but one flick of its tail will see it somersaulting down the bank, with all the risks to injury that this entails. As you all know fish are like live bars of soap, it is impossible to be sure you’ll keep a good hold, so why try. Use a proper weigh sling; like the ones outlined above and avoid the pointless risk of injuring a good fish.

8. Use antiseptic on hook wounds, sores and lifted scales

There are a good number of proprietary fishing antiseptics out there and you should use these. A small amount on a cotton bud will help a fish fight infection in a hook hold. The same can be done with sores and missing scales.

9. Remove any watches or bracelets that might damage the fish

If you wear a stainless or metal watch remove it before you lift the fish for a photo. There is a high risk of removing scales or damaging the fish’s skin and slime layer with a metal object, which can be quite sharp at times.

10. The final step of proper carp care, releasing the fish carefully

Finally, take the time to respectfully release the fish. If it is exhausted from a long fight, or has perhaps been out of the water for a while it may need time to recover.

Slowly lower your weigh sling into the water, gently opening one side to let it fill with water. Once the fish is supported you can hold it upright until it starts to kick and wants to go back. If you feel that it is starting to roll onto its side, hold it upright until it recovers. On rare occasions this can take a while. This can be particularly a problem on hot summer days. I have lost carp of over 30lb on my water from mishandling by clumsy anglers. So be patient until they swim away.

Basically then these ten tips equal RESPECT. Respect our quarry and these fish will grow well and give please to dozens of anglers on the years.

France has opened its borders to fully vaccinated UK tourists and our carp fishing in France holidays are back on!

We have compiled this list of the steps you need to take to travel, however please check the requirements yourself too because it is an evolving situation.

Entry into France

– Be fully vaccinated ( PLEASE NOTE; as with most EU countries, you now need to have had a booster vaccine dose within nine months of your second in order to maintain your 'fully vaccinated' status for entry into the country).

– All passengers need to take a sworn statement (declaration of honor) certifying the absence of COVID-19 symptoms and of any contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the 14 days prior to their crossing. At French border controls, you will need to present a completed digital or paper version of this form.

Traveling with children

Our understanding is that unvaccinated children under 12 years old can travel with their parents/guardians, no negative test required.
