My first experience was when I enrolled in the Summer 4 week immersion course. I flew over from Australia especially to live and study in Shanghai so I could fully immerse myself in the language and the culture. This truly fast tracked my learning of the basics enough for me to continue my Chinese online learning program and now have progressed to HSK 4! My most recent teacher, Gemini has been instrumental in my improvement and confidence with the language. Her teaching style and patience with me has contributed to my progress immensely and I truly appreciate her! I have grown very fond of Silk Mandarin and all of the staff over these 3 years, so much so I consider them all, my friends...

Australia
Since the outbreak of the covid 19, I have taken mandarin video lessons. Personally, I think there are more benefits than face to face classes. First, it is more flexible to adjust the class schedule. Also, the platform is quite a user friendly that the student improves their Chinese skills by writing Chinese characters themselves and sharing the screen with teachers. Even communication with the teacher is good because of a good internet connection. I am really satisfied with the online class. I would definitely recommend the online class to my friends.

South Korea
She provides a wonderful experience for Mandarin learning. When I face some troubles, she gives me excellent examples to solve the problems. Also, she chat about some dairy topic in the introduction, so I can concentrate on the learning. After the class, she gives me the moderate amount of homework and feedback to each lecture, that enable me to understand the content. Overall, she is adept at teaching non-mandarin student in good way, so I recommend the student to learn Chinese by teacher Gemini.

Japan
Coming into the Silk Program, I had 0 experience in Chinese. The only language I could speak was English. I started in the middle of July with no knowledge of speaking, tones, or writing, and now I am studying for the HSK3 test. That being said, studying Chinese as an American has been extremely challenging, but studying at Silk has made the process quite enjoyable. They tailor the classes to your schedule to help you get the most out of their program. I personally work two jobs so I don't have the time to dedicate myself full time to studying Chinese. My teacher understands this situation, so we set up classes and workload accordingly.

Lastly, I want to speak a bit about my teacher Yanqin. Starting my first class I felt so uncomfortable with myself because I didn't know anything. Really, Yanqin made me feel very comfortable from our first class. There was no judgement on my abilities, but rather patience and understanding. We are taking Chinese step by step and I can feel the improvement each month. Our first class we could only talk about what our names were, but today we talked about the Coronavirus vaccine.

It really has been an amazing journey to learn Chinese and I think that learning at Silk (online) is a great investment of time and money. We have listed the 5 most important 'culture shock' issues foreigners coming to China and staying there for a while will run into sooner or later. For some foreigners these may be big problems, while others won't even notice and some will find them funny or even like it.
1. The language barrier

The Language Barrier of Business Chinese Language Learning
Learning the basics of Mandarin is extremely helpful. Most taxi drivers and shop assistants don't speak a word of English. You can get by with just English in cities like Beijing and Shanghai, but your life will be limited: you'll need to have addresses written out in characters before you set off and likely end up eating in expensive expat-oriented restaurants.

Chinese does without many of the small 'pleases', 'thank yous', 'woulds', 'coulds' and 'mays' that English works with. Instead, it's a language of sharp, dynamic building blocks that can sound quite jaggedly in translation. Someone saying 'Come here now!' or 'Buy now!' is not necessarily being rude. Most likely they are literally translating each Chinese building block into English.

Even if you can only say a few words, the Chinese people you meet will appreciate your attempts to overcome the language barrier.

2. Chinese food

Chinese Food Learning Courses at Silk Mandarin
Chinese people love to eat and China boasts one of the world's greatest and most varied cuisines. Indeed, one of the great joys of any visit to China is experiencing one or more of China’s famous eight regional cuisines. You will be thrilled by the abundant delicacies it offers, like jiǎozi 饺子 (Dumplings), Běijīng kǎoyā 北京烤鸭 (Beijing duck), hóngshāoròu 红烧肉 (Red braised pork) and not to forget huǒguō 火锅 (Hot pot) just to name a few.

Eating and drinking in China can be a mind-broadening and enjoyable cultural experience. However, there are likely to be many surprises along the way. During the long development of Chinese eating culture, many practices have evolved that you may find quite different from what you are used to. Their food include many things unusual in the West, such as different types of fungi, different kinds of sea vegetables, exotic sea animals, snakes, bamboo shoots, bitter melon, giant white radishes, lotus pods and not to forget their well-known tofu.

Yes, expect surprises, from the Chinese delicacy that is chicken claw, century egg where eggs are being soaked for months in black tea, sheep penis - yes you heard that correct - (prepared on a stick and best served hot might you wonder), snake soup, to tuna eyeball and last but not least stinky tofu.

Getting acquainted to the different dining manners and etiquette will be less challenging. At a Chinese meal, dishes are served one by one in the middle of the table, and you need to pick up food from the plates and bowls shared with others seated at the table with you. After you have ordered, tea or a different drink and cold dishes will be served first. Hot dishes are then served one by one. Soup is often the last dish of a meal, followed by fruit for dessert.

Indeed, expect surprises, but no doubt you are going to be thrilled by Chinese food!

3. Personal space

Different Understanding about Personal Space between Chinese and Foreigners
If you come from a country where queuing is habitual and bodily contact with strangers uncommon, the surging hordes to be found in China's huge cities – many cities that most Westerners have never heard of boast larger populations than London, Paris or New York – can prove a bit intimidating. Pushing and barging is routine, be it getting onto public transport or into an attraction, but, importantly, no one takes it personally.

Personal observations and questions are not uncommon in Chinese culture, be that an observation on one's weight, one's single status, one's salary or enquiries about where you are going today. As a general rule, he does not intend to insult. They are just being friendly.

There are still parts of rural China where being a laowai 老外 (foreigner) is unusual and he can expect to be stared at. In China, as in much of Asia, staring at people is not rude. It's just a way of expressing curiosity. That means that you, in turn, can stare back as much as you would like.

Culture Check
China is different! Every foreigner will agree on that. Why doesn't a Chinese 'yes' mean the same as the English 'yes'? How should you take a compliment like 'your face is soooo small' or 'you have straight legs'? Why didn't we still come to the point after so many meetings and do I really have to join the KTV party?

This practical course checks out China for you by answering your most urgent questions. It will help you to live comfortably through your first period in China by softening the 'culture shock' that most people experience when they first come to China. Topics treated are:

Food & Dinner;

Meetings & Etiquette;

Physical & Social distance;

Guanxi & Mianzi;

It supplies you with some indispensable Do's and Don'ts for your daily life and your business career.

Chinese Language Culture Check
Culture Complete
The Culture Complete course provides you not only with the 'how' but also with the 'why' of Chinese culture and habits. And understanding where it all comes from makes it so much easier to accept and to apply it yourself correctly. After this course you will understand and know how to:

Deal with business affairs in China;

Effectively work with your Chinese colleagues;

Live a pleasant and 'Chinese' life in China!

This fascinating course reveals and explains the, most times invisible, roots of Chinese and shows how strongly this source still steers the believe and behaviour of Chinese people.

Culture Complete Courses by Silk Mandarin
The course starts where it all begun, the Agricultural Civilisation alongside the Yellow River some 2.000 BC. It then tracks China's cultural path through history from Lao-tse and Confucius, to the highly influential Qin and Han dynasties, next to Mao Zedong and ending in today's China of Xi Ji Ping. It touches upon other important cultural aspects as Yin and Yang, the 5 Elements, Fengshui and (Martial) Arts.

Now that you understand the culture's source, this course explains to you, the often spoken of but seldom well understood, Guanxi and Mianzi, as well as Collectivism versus Individualism. It does so with an abundance of examples of daily live, clearly illustrating how deeply these phenomena still are embedded in everyday life.

Finally, and most of all, the course supplies you with indispensable Do's and Don'ts for your daily life and your business career.

Next are the highlights being treated:

Ancient Agricultural Civilization

Laoism, Legalism, Confucianism and Buddhism

Philosophy versus Religion

Law & Social rules: the impact of Confucianism

Guanxi & Mianzi

Collectivism versus Individualism

Indispensable Do's and Don'ts!

If you want to learn traditional Chinese online, please leave us a message.

2023-02-27T11:45:18+0900 http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/hYvctC40CEX silkmandarin http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/hYvctC40CEX#comments http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/hYvctC40CEX Business Chinese(2023年02月27日)
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/business-chinese-language-courses-in-mandarin/

2 Plus 1 - Business Chinese
2 PLUS 1, that is our curriculum to teach you Business Chinese / BCT. Through learning Chinese, you can transform yourself from a low value employee into somebody who is critical to the success of a project in China, thereby making yourself a very attractive hire.

It Improves Your Professional Performance.
It is a fact that organizations who have managed to master the Chinese language and to understand China's customs and etiquette are far more successful in reaching their fore set goals than those who failed to do so. Moreover, understanding Mandarin, its culture and etiquette makes it so much more easy and fun to become befriended with your colleagues and clients, to help to build your 'guanxi', benefitting both you and your company.

It Connects You To Your Chinese Colleagues And Clients.
Language influences culture, so learning Mandarin not only helps you to communicate with Chinese colleagues and clients but also helps you to understand how Chinese people think and feel. Equally important, when you at least try to learn Mandarin, you show your colleagues and clients respect. And that will definitely shorten the distance between them and you.

It Makes You Enjoy Your Life In China To The Full!
Being able to do your daily shopping, book a restaurant, talk to your neighbours, it all makes your life so much more convenient and richer. And through the language you will also learn to appreciate China’s history and culture. You will literally sense the beauty of its porcelain and poetry, its arts and calligraphy, its food culture, all of these still so present and visible in nowadays China. Understanding Mandarin enhances your daily life in China enormously!

It Improves Your Brain Power.
We all know we have to keep our brains well trained and studies have shown that Mandarin speakers use both sides of their brains, instead of just one like non-tonal languages speakers. Indeed, Chinese takes more brain power and as we all know, use it or you loose it! Learning Chinese definitely is important to keep your brain healthy and strong.

If you want to know more details of why is it important to learn chinese, please visit our website.

If you have needs to learn chinese speaking online, please leave us a message.

Now the price of mandarin course is reasonable, anything you need, please contact us.

2023-02-27T11:42:49+0900 http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/Tn0jSCndrTE silkmandarin http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/Tn0jSCndrTE#comments http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/Tn0jSCndrTE 2022 Chinese HSK Test Available!(2023年02月27日)
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/2022-chinese-hsk-test-available.html

The 2022 Chinese HSK test online dates are now available! Find them in the picture below.

Keep studying and save the dates for a higher level's challenge in the next year! Are you ready?
Please check more information below if you have more questions about HSK↓↓↓

Is HSK hanzi going to extend to 9 levels?

In April this year, the Chinese Education Bureau announced that the new HSK Level Standard would become effecive from July, 2021.

The new system will account for a more reliable assessment of the student's level. In addition, the new HSK mandarin system will require knowledge of a higher amount of vocabulary and this especially holds for the advanced levels (Level7-9).

(The new HSK level and vocabulary requirements)

However, so far there is no confirmed time when the 9-level system will be applied in the HSK hskk tests. We will keep everyone updated here if there is any detaied news coming up.

The reform of HSK exam indicates the increasinly improving level of non-native speakers' Chinese language skill as well as Chinese language's popularity.

For Chinese learners, what you can do now, is to keep studying (pay more attention to characters!) and to lay a solid foundation for further improvement to higher levels in the future!

What are the HSK, HSKK, and BCT exams?

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency, assesses non-native Chinese speakers' abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily, academic and professional lives. HSK consists of six levels, namely HSK (level I), HSK (level II), HSK (level III), HSK (level IV), HSK (level V), and HSK (level VI).

The HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) assesses the test takers' oral Chinese abilities. HSKK exam consists of three levels, HSKK (Primary level), HSKK (Intermediate level) and HSKK (Advanced level). HSKK is conducted in the form of audio recording.

Business Chinese Test (BCT), an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency, assesses non-native Chinese speakers' abilities to use the Chinese language in real business or common working environments. BCT is divided into writing and oral tests, which are independent to each other. The writing test consists of two levels, namely, BCT (A) and BCT (B). Oral BCT is Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) and conducted via Internet.

Do you need the HSK exam for your company, visa, or daily life?

The HSK is now the standard exam used by many companies and universities to evaluate the Chinese abilities of a non-native speaker. It is required if you want to study in universities in China and it is very helpful if you want to work in China because you can show companies your skills and also he test can give you extra points for the visa (see the details in the table below).

How to register?

You can register easily on chinesetest.cn creating a new user and choosing your country, test, level, and date. Or you can ask Echo of our education department to help you sign up.

What are the times and durations of the exams?

Duration depends on the level that you choose. These range from 40 minutes for HSK level 1 to 140 minutes for HSK level 6. All the tests are on Saturday and Sunday.

Paper vs. computer tests

When you register for the exam you can choose which format to use between paper and computer. The main difference is in the writing part because with the paper test, you need to write using Chinese characters (hanzi). For both formats, you need to go to a physical location to take the exam.

Cost of the exam

The cost of the exam depends on the level. This range from HSK 1 being 150 RMB to HSK 6 costing you 650 RMB (for each level 100 RMB is added).

What score do I need to pass?

You need to have at least 60% of correct answers to pass. This means 120 points out of 200 for HSK 1 and 2, and 180 points out of 300 for HSK 3 and above.

When are the exam results published?

The results are published online around two weeks after the exam date for computer tests, and around four weeks after the paper test date.Might you want the official test certificate you need to apply for it on chinesetest.cn and pay 60 RMB for cost of production and delivery.

We are proud to say that over the years Silk Mandarin's students have performed exceptionally well on their HSK exams. We are confident that a new HSK level system will not influence that and our student will continue to reach more than satisfactory results!

See those exciting results of 2021
We hope this can help you to understand more about the HSK, HSKK, and BCT exams.

Don't hesitate to contact us if you want more information or if you are seeking any advise of improving your Chinese language skills!

If you want to get started in mandarin Chinese, please contact us.

2023-02-27T11:42:11+0900 http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/wPziRypQRTl silkmandarin http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/wPziRypQRTl#comments http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/wPziRypQRTl Youth Chinese Test(2023年01月21日)
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/yct-youth-mandarin-chinese-test.html

The Youth Chinese Test (YCT) is an international standardised test of Chinese language proficiency. It assesses young foreign students' abilities to use Chinese in their daily and academic lives. Compared with the HSK exam, the YCT is designed for young people and begins to measure proficiency at a lower level than the HSK. As students progress in their study of Chinese, they may continue to measure their proficiency by taking the HSK.

YCT consists of a writing test and a speaking test, which are independent of each other. The writing test is divided into four levels, namely, the YCT (yct level 1), YCT (yct level 2), YCT (level III), and YCT (level IV). The speaking test is divided into the YCT (Beginner Level) and YCT (Intermediate Level).

YCT Level 1
Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (yct 1 test) can understand and use some of the most common Chinese phrases and sentences and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies.

YCT Level 2
Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level II) can understand and use some simple Chinese phrases and sentences and cope with basic level communications.

YCT Level 3
Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level III), having reached an excellent level in basic Chinese, can communicate on familiar daily topics in a simple manner.

YCT Level 4
Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level IV) can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. When travelling in China, they can manage most forms of communication in Chinese.

YCT proficiency compared to other systems
Proficiency levels according to the YCT system can be compared with HSKK, BCT, YCT and with levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the Interagency Language Roundtable scale (ILR) and the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (CLPS). My first experience was when I enrolled in the Summer 4 week immersion course. I flew over from Australia especially to live and study in Shanghai so I could fully immerse myself in the language and the culture. This truly fast tracked my learning of the basics enough for me to continue my lessons online and now have progressed to HSK 4!

Natalie

Australia
Since the outbreak of the covid 19, I have taken online classes.

Jeongsun

Tatsushige

I highly recommend this program 10/10 for everything (staff/teachers/program).

Jairus

United States
Silk mandarin is such a professional Chinese Learning School in which you will work with professional teachers who understand students very well and tailor the best learning method for their development.

Natalie

Australia
Since the outbreak of the covid 19, I have taken online classes. Today I'm going to share 2 of them with you. Let's get started!

Some New Chinese Buzzwords You Must Know

内卷/nèijuǎn: pointless competition

Like the origin of many other buzzwords, 内卷/nèijuǎn initially got popular among university students.

Some New Chinese Buzzwords You Must Know

Student using computer while cycling on university campus.

This is the photo which triggered a hot discussion on the Chinese internet in 2020

Soon after it was uploaded on social media, this visible sense of competition resonated strongly with a great range of people who are working under high pressure.

Amid this internet discussion, a concept called "内卷" was widely spread. Let's take a closer look at the word: "内/nèi" means "inside" and "卷/juǎn" means "to roll". "内卷" literally means "rolling to the inside".

What does this mean?

内卷 is not an original Chinese word. Its English equivalence is "involution". Involution is the opposite of evolution. It's a term that Clifford Geertz (American anthropologist) used in his famous agricultural research. Its principal thesis is that many centuries of intensifying wet-rice cultivation in Indonesia had produced greater social complexity without significant technological or political change.

Some New Chinese Buzzwords You Must Know

Indeed, 内卷, literally meaning "rolling to the inside", implies the increase of internal complexity, but there is actually no external advancement which can benefit social development.

On Chinese internet, there are a few vivid stories to help people understand this academic term. Here is one of them

Imagine you are watching a live performance, the person sits in front of you stands up to have a better view. What will you do? Of course you will have to also stand up in order to see what's going on. Same thing for people who sit behind you. Eventually everyone has to stand up and watch the show, however, nobody gets a better vision of the performance as a result.

Good interpretation of "内卷", right? Yes, in short, 内卷 refers to pointless competition.

Young Chinese people "love" the word "内卷" because it brings a new aspect to explain their daily anxiety and stress. They are tired of endless competitions. But this word shows to them that most of the competition that they are involved in is pointless.

Some New Chinese Buzzwords You Must Know

Statistics showsthat in the first half of 2021, the total number of applicants for the civilservice exam in all provinces

nationwide exceeded 152,500. But the number of people that eventually got employed was less than 3% of the total

applicant number.

USE OF 内卷 ↓↓↓

别内卷了,我太累了!
Bié nèijuǎn le, wǒ tài lèi le!
Stop this pointless competition. I am so tired!

卷王

juǎnwáng

the king of involution

我们公司很卷。

Wǒmen gōngsī hěn juǎn。

There are endless cut-throat competition dramas going on in my company.

躺平/tǎngpíng: Lying flat

The public outrage on the internet towards "内卷" gives rise to the popularity of another buzzword - "躺平", the opposite attitude to "内卷".

Some New Chinese Buzzwords You Must Know

"躺" means "lying down" and "平" means "flat". I guess you can tell the meaning of this word already! Chinese people use this word to describe those who are tired of endless competition, instead, they choose to stop "running in the cage", to lie flat.

躺平 is the Chinese version of "Low Desire Society". As a result of social development, more and more young people feel it is hard to earn enough for a decent lifestyle that the mainstream standard requires. That is, having a stable job, working hard, striving to buy a house, a car and having children.

躺平 reminds me of another buzzword that prevailed on the internet a few years ago - 佛系/fóxì: buddha-like mindset. To some extent, this type of buzzwords all reflect the increasing hardship that young people are going through to realize the social class transition.

It's interesting to see that, just over a decade, 躺平 lifestyle is threatening the Chinese core value of diligence which has been rooted in China for over thousands of years.

USE OF 躺平 ↓↓↓

在上海压力太大了,我想回老家躺平。
Zài Shànghǎi yālì tài dà le, wǒ xiǎng huí lǎojiā tǎngpíng。
It's too stressful living in Shanghai. I want to loaf around in my hometown.

干嘛这么拼?躺平有什么不好的?
Gànmá zhème pīn, tǎng píng yǒu shénme bùhǎo de?
Why do you work so hard? Will it hurt you to just lie down?

That's all for today. We talked about 内卷 and 躺平. It's an interesting way to observe Chinese society, right? I have more to share in the future! Stay tuned!

Silk mandarin provides hsk mandarin, online chinese language classes, chinese cultural training, chinese culture course, mandarin summer camp shanghai, business chinese course and etc. For more information, please feel free to contact us!

2022-10-14T10:38:41+0900 http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/COqBoFKR3CK silkmandarin http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/COqBoFKR3CK#comments http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/COqBoFKR3CK All you need to know about 劳动节 - Labour Day(2022年)
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/learn-chinese-online/
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/learn-chinese-online/
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/learn-chinese-online/

Labour Day - 劳动节 Láodòng jié, also known as International Workers' Day and often referred to as May Day, is a celebration of all the working classes and their achievements. It occurs every year on May 1st. Nowadays, It's celebrated in over 80 countries worldwide.

In this article, let's talk about everything you need to know about Labour Day (劳动节/Láodòng jié) in China!

Labour Day

The origin of International Labour Day

In the 19th century, to maximize profits, workers in the US were forced to work 14 to 18 hours a day.

The heavy oppression stirred up great anger among the workers. In order to fight for basic survival conditions, workers united and fought against business owners through a strike movement. The strike slogan was the demand for the "three-eight system".

Labour Day

"three-eight system"

On May 1st in 1886, strike movements broke out throughout the United States to force the business owners to implement the "eight-hour workday". In Chicago alone, 45,000 workers participated in the strike, paralyzing the major industrial sectors of the United States. The U.S. government finally announced the implementation of the "eight-hour workday" a month later, showing that the workers' movement achieved an initial victory.

To commemorate the strike movement of American workers, May 1st every year was designated as International Labour Day, the common holiday of labourers all over the world.

Labour Day

Labour Day in China

China is one of the countries that celebrates Labour Day on May 1st, since the date is "5/1", Chinese people also call Labour Day as "五一节/Wǔyī Jié" and sometimes just simply as "五一/Wǔyī".

Labour Day was introduced into China in 1918, along with the rising of working class in the country. On May 1st in 1920, workers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other industrial cities held a huge march to appeal for "three-eight system" and chanted slogans such as "Long live labour/劳工万岁" and "Long live the Chinese industrial world/中华工界万岁".

Labour Day

Meanwhile, more and more progressive thoughts such as "Labor is sacred/劳工神圣" emerged. Articles such as "History of the May Day Movement" and "The Problem of Hunan Women Workers in Shanghai Hou Sheng Yarn Factory" were published spreading in the whole country.

All this happened on May 1st of 1920. It was the first time that Chinese people celebrated Labour Day.

After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Labour Day was officially designated as a national holiday and has been celebrated since then.

Labour Day

996, the old dilemma in our times

May 1st was initially set for working class to celebrate their victory of the strike. However, to fight for work life balance, every generation has their mission. In China at this time, the problem is called 996.

996 is a popular work schedule practiced by a number of Chinese IT companies such as Byte Dance, Tencent and Huawei etc. In recent years, it's very common for many employees in that industry to work from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, 6 days per week. 996 is a trending topic in Chinese society over last few years.

I bring up this topic here as it's ironic to see that workers were fighting for "three-eight system" 1880s and now in 2020s we are still troubled by the same issue.

Labour Day

What's interesting to mention here is, in 2019, Chinese tech tycoon Jack Ma defended the culture of 996, calling it a "blessing". He also argued that China's economy was "very likely to lose vitality and impetus" if the system wasn't there. His view was backed by Richard Liu, the CEO of another Chinese giant e-commerce company JD, who called people against "996" as "slackers".

Different from 1880s, in China's IT industry of 2020s, these arguments made by the company's founders as well as the self-made billionaires are partly convincing to many young employees. They themselves have chosen to sacrifice their life quality in pursuit of higher income and a consequent class transition.

In 2021, with more and more critics stating that the 996 working hour system is a violation of Chinese law and have called it "modern slavery", 996 was deemed illegal by China's Supreme People's Court. But in reality, it's still a long way for many young employees in this competitive society to achieve an ideal work life balance.

Labour Day

A Chinese phrase you must know for 五一

After living in China for a while, you will definitely be impressed by all kinds of service that you can get easily. This convenience is built by millions of people's extreme hard work.

In Chinese, we have a special expression to thank people for their help or hard work. It's:

辛苦了!
Xīnkǔ le!

It literally means "to go through trouble". In other words, "you've worked hard".

On this special day, let's learn to say "辛苦了/xīnkǔle" to show your appreciation to all the people who have worked to help you, especially the 阿姨/āyí who helps you cleaning your house and 师傅/shīfu who helps you to fix the floor!

大家辛苦了!劳动节快乐!
Dàjiā xīnkǔ le! Láodòng jié kuàilè!
Thanks for your hard work, everyone! Happy Labour Day!

I hope this article will help you know more about Labour Day in a Chinese context and may the power and spirits of Labour Day be always with you!

Have a great holiday!
May Shanghai people resume normal life every soon!

Silk mandarin provides hsk mandarin, online mandarin classes, mandarin chinese online classes, private chinese teacher, learn mandarin online course and etc. For more information or want to learn mandarin online, please feel free to contact us!

2022-10-14T10:38:01+0900 http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/Ek8fuKsuDTp silkmandarin http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/Ek8fuKsuDTp#comments http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/Ek8fuKsuDTp All you need to know about 清明节 - Qingming Festival(2022年)
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/yct-youth-mandarin-chinese-test.html
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/yct-youth-mandarin-chinese-test.html
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/yct-youth-mandarin-chinese-test.html

At the time point between the end of March and beginning of April, most places in China are dampened by the continuous drizzle. Meanwhile, the booming plants and increasingly warm breeze are reminding people 清明节/Qīngmíng Jié is approaching.

清明节 Qīngmíng Jié - Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day or Chinese Memorial Day, is a very important traditional Chinese festival in Chinese culture. It falls on the first day of the fifth solar term of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar every year. This year, it is on April 5th.

Some certain customs are witnessed during this festival. In this article, let's walk through all you need to know about 清明节!

all-you-need-to-know-about-qingmingjie-qingming2-removebg-preview.png

What is the meaning of 清明?

As one of the solar terms, the meaning of 清明 is closely related to the weather. In Chinese, "清/qīng" means clearness and "明/míng" means brightness. 清明/qīngmíng together means it's the season that spring atmosphere is in the air and the weather is clear and bright. Everything is full of vitality from 清明 on.

Qingming Festival

A solar term is any of 24 periods in traditional Chinese lunisolar calendars that matches a particular astronomical event or signifies some natural phenomenon. The points are spaced 15° apart along the ecliptic and are used by lunisolar calendars to stay synchronized with the seasons, which is crucial for agrarian societies. The solar terms are also used to calculate intercalary months; which month is repeated depends on the position of the sun at the time.

all-you-need-to-know-about-qingmingjie-qingming4-removebg-preview.png

Originated from 寒食节

Except being one of the solar terms, 清明节 is also originated from an Ancient Chinese Festival called 寒食节 Hánshí Jié - Cold Food Festival. You must be wondering about the meaning of "Cold Food Festival".

There is a story behind it: Jie Zitui (介子推), a nobleman during the Spring and Autumn Period (B.C. 770 - B.C. 476). He was a loyal follower of the Duke Wen of the Jin Kingdom (晋文公). At one point when the duke was going through rough times, Jie Zitui cut some flesh from his own thigh and cooked it for the duke to keep him from starving.

When Duke Wen eventually came to power, he sent for Jie Zitui, who was living a lonely life as a poor man in the woods. In order to force Jie Zitui to respond, Duke Wen decided to set a forest fire to smoke him out from the woods. Unfortunately, Jie Zitui was killed in the fire. Feeling regretful for Jie's death, Duke Wen announced that the use of fire should be banned for days to commemorate his death.

With no use of fire, the commemoration days gradually become days with eating cold food. As the custom spread, it eventually became a festival called the Cold Food Festival - 寒食节. Over time, this tradition was gradually blended with 清明节's customs and the two festivals combined.
all-you-need-to-know-about-qingmingjie-qingming5-removebg-preview.png
What people usually do during 清明节?

Tomb Sweeping Ceremony - 扫墓 sǎo mù

The tomb sweeping ceremony is the most important activity during 清明节.

Chinese people believes that our ancestors have never left us, they are having their life continuously in another world. By visiting their tomb yearly during 清明节, it is a way to maintain the connection between the deceased and the living.

A traditional tomb sweeping ceremony includes many steps:

Firstly, remove the grass from the tomb. Chinese people think that if the tomb of the deceased is covered by grass, the family does not respect the deceased enough. So the first thing Chinese people do when they visit the tomb is to make sure it's nice and neat.

Next, they place joss sticks in front of the tomb, and paper money by the side of the tomb. As Chinese people believe that when you burn paper money into ash, the deceased can receive them in the other world. With this concept, some people are bringing this paper money burning custom to another level. They even buy paper houses, paper cars, paper clothes of the luxurious brands, and almost everything they can think of. This is to make sure that the deceased are having a cosy life in the other world.

Qingming Festival

Paper money and Paper cars

While burning paper money, a nice meal is placed in front of the tomb. Usually people will prepare what the person's favourite food was when he or she was alive and the meal will also be served with Chinese white wine.

Lastly, the whole ceremony will be ended with the sound of firecrackers, giving it a grand closure.

Spring Outing - 踏青 tàqīng

Qingming Festival

As I mentioned earlier that 清明 means clear and bright, this season is the golden time in spring!

The wonderful weather and pleasant temperature make 清明 the perfect timing for hiking and spring outings. Chinese people usually seize this holiday for a family trip to enjoy spring and embrace nature.

Kite Flying - 放风筝 fàng fēngzheng

Qingming Festival

Flying kites is another popular activity during 清明节. It's a very interesting custom that Chinese people like to cut the string of the kite while it's flying in the air, as they believe that flying kite away can help send away bad luck.

all-you-need-to-know-about-qingmingjie-qingming9-removebg-preview.png

What to eat during 清明节?

清明粑 qīngmíng bā & 青团 qīngtuán

To celebrate 清明节 in Southern China, people usually eat 清明粑 and 青团. I hope you had a great fun experiencing Chinese culture to the full! Today is Lantern Festival 元宵节 (Yuánxiāo Jié). It lies on the 15th day of the new lunar year, which is Feb 15th this year. 元宵节 marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations.

In this article, I would love to share some interesting knowledge of 元宵节 with you.

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

What does 元宵 mean exactly?

Your first impression of 元宵 might be the white, round and sweet rice balls that you tried in a Chinese restaurant

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

Yes! Chinese Northerners call this Lantern Festival specialty 元宵. Actually 元宵 has another meaning.

In Chinese, 元 can mean "first" and 宵 usually refers to "night". So 元宵 literally means the first night that we can see the full moon in the lunar new year. It symbolizes the arrival of spring and the end of the Chinese New Year celebration.

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

How was 元宵节 originated?

About how 元宵节 was originated, there are many different stories since ancient times. Here I would like to share two famous ones with you.

The first story indicates that 元宵节 is somehow related to Buddhism.

Ruling the beginning of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Emperor Hanmingdi was a loyal Buddhist believer. He heard that some monks light up lanterns in their temples to conquer darkness and show respect to Buddha on the 15th day of the first lunar month. He decided to do the same. Therefore, he stipulate that all the temples and houses should light up lanterns on that evening. This Buddhist custom gradually became a folk custom in China and a permanent festival for all the Chinese people.

The second story is based on a Chinese mythology.

The Jade Emperor's favorite crane was killed by villagers and he was furious. Then he decided to burn the village down on the 15th day of the lunar year. The Jade Emperor's daughter can't tolerate her dad's behavior, so she warned the villagers in advance. A wise man advised the villagers to hang lots of red lanterns outside to give the Jade Emperor the impression that the village was already on fire. The emperor was fooled by the lanterns and the village survived successfully. This tradition of hanging red lanterns on the 15th day of the lunar year was kept as a tradition since then.

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

How do Chinese celebrate 元宵节?
So what do Chinese people do to celebrate 元宵节? Let's check out the customs one by one!

1. Appreciate beautiful lanterns

You will be able to see many beautiful lanterns during the festival, easpecially if you go to lantern shows. Apart from creating the warm festive atmosphere, Chinese people like lanterns bacause of its good implication. In Chinese, "灯/dēng/lantern" sounds like "丁/dīng/number of people". So lighting up lanterns symbolizes adding more people into the family. Also, lanterns represent brighteness and happiness in Chinese culture. Generally, all the good wishes are in this one little lantern.

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

2. Solve interesting lantern riddles

During 元宵节, ancient Chinese people like to write riddles on the red paper and paste them on colorful lanterns for people to solve.

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

Since solving riddles are fun and for enlightening wisdom, it has gradually become an irreplaceable custom of 元宵节.

Look at the lantern riddle above, "上上下下,不上不下",can you guess what's the character it describes?

3. Enjoy watching lion dances

Lion dance is commonly performed during 元宵节 as Chinese people believe that it can bring them good luck and fortune. It's very similar to a dragon dance but lion dance is normally operated by only two dancers instead of a bunch of people, one of whom manipulates the head while the other is controlling the tail of the lion. The fundamental movements in lion dance can be found in Chinese martial arts, and it is commonly performed to a vigorous drum beat.

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

4. Eat tasty 元宵/yuánxiāo

Eating 元宵 is another important tradition. 元宵 is made of glutinous rice. The stuffing includes bean paste, black sesame, hawthorn paste, various kinds of fruit and so on. It can be boiled, deep fried or steamed to enjoy.

As the most popular Chinese dessert for this season, 元宵 has its special meaning to Chinese people too. Its round shape implies unity and completeness. Its sweet taste symbolizes happiness and harmony.

元宵's another version 汤圆/tāngyuán sounds like 团圆/tuányuán, which means reunion in Chinese. It therefore perfectly fits the Lantern Fetsival's spirit - family reunion.

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

元宵/yuánxiāo VS 汤圆/tāngyuán

You might be confused that some people call the rice ball 元宵and some call that 汤圆. What is the difference between them?

Well, basically we can distinguish them by where they are made. If it's made in North China, it's 元宵. If it's made in South China, it's 汤圆. North China 元宵 is rolled in a basket while South China 汤圆 is kneaded by hand. Since the way of making this dessert is different, the looks of them are different too. The surface of 元宵 is relatively dry and soft, while 汤圆 is usually smooth and glutinous

All you need to know about 元宵节 - Lantern Festival

Every year on Lantern Festival, there is a bustle on Chinese internet comparing 汤圆 and 元宵, as this is one of issues about North - South rivlalry in China. No one was allowed to travel from 7pm to 5am, but on the night of 元宵节, everyone could be on street freely.

By lighting up lanterns, solving lantern riddles, visiting marketplace, women were free to mingle with men and find their love of life on this very night. Of course! It's the Double 11 (shuangshiyi, Shuāng shíyī) - the yearly online Shopping Festival! This year, it's the 13th shuangshiyi since it first came out.

Some of you might have heard of it already or even have been participating in it. But I still would like to share with you many interesting stories behind it to help you to know better about its development. In this post, let's have a closer look at shuangshiyi!

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

The Origin of shuangshiyi

shuangshiyi is originally a festival called Bachelor's Day, also known as The Singles' Day (光棍节 Guānggùn Jié). On this day, many people on the Internet will play jokes whining about a lack of romance in their life.

The date, November 11th (11/11), was chosen because the numeral 1 resembles a bare stick (光棍 guānggùn), which is Chinese Internet slang for an unmarried man who does not add "branches" to the family "tree".

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

There are many versions about who invented 光棍节. The widely recognized one is that it was born on the campus of Nanjing University in the 1990s. The four boys who were chatting in the dorm joking about that "11.11 should be 光棍节!" may have never thought that it would so popular today.

A fun fact about 光棍节: Paradoxically, this holiday has now become a popular date to celebrate relationships, many couples decide to get married and say goodbye to their single life on this day.

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

A Humble Start of shuangshiyi in 2009

With all the Internet revelry, 光棍节 gradually became an opportunity for business.

In 2009, Chinese E-Commerce giant Alibaba ( the parent company of Tmall, Taobao, AliExpress, etc.) created a shopping festival named "Double 11" with the reason to celebrate 光棍节. Alibaba promoted the festival with the slogan: Even if you don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend, you can at least shop like crazy!

By emphasizing that singles who are often shamed over their status should treat themselves in this special day, Alibaba created a kind of party feeling for this festival.

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

Over a 12-year period, this hyped-up shopping festival has been developed into the most important online shopping festival in China, attracting more and more companies and brands around the world to participate, even overshadowing Black Friday.

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

A Huge Success in 2020

shuangshiyi's sales record break itself every year. Here I just list 3 of them to show you an example:

剁手 [duò shǒu]: chop hands off

People who are obsessed with online shopping and always regret after buying. They joke that they need to chop off their hands to stop buying.

E.g.: 今天我买了很多东西,我要剁手了。

Jīntiān wǒ mǎi le hěn duō dōngxi, wǒ yào duòshǒu le.

I bought a lot of things today, I need to cut my hands off.

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

吃土 [chī tǔ]: eat dirt, be broken

If you spend all the money on shopping and have no money for food, there is only dirt left to eat for free then.

E.g.: 这个月没钱了,我只能吃土。

Zhè gè yuè méi qián le, wǒ zhǐ néng chītǔ.

I don't have money left this month, I have to eat dirt.

种草 [zhòng cǎo]: plant grass

Recommend a product and attract people to like it too.

Example: 我今天种草了朋友的一双鞋!

Wǒ jīntiān zhòngcǎo le péngyou de yì shuāng xié!

I like a pair of shoes which my friend recommended to me today!

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

What's New This Year?

shuangshiyi is constantly expanding and updating itself every year. So what is new about it this year? We can see it from the time for shopping, the platform and the way of purchase.

When to buy?

This year the scale of pre-orders is getting even bigger than before as Alibaba applied new strategies like giving away free samples and early bird discount to expand their sales. Although the shopping festival is branded as "Double 11", the sales actually starts on October 20, thus making the Double 11 shopping journey a month long "marathon" instead of a one day shopping thing.

Some people even started planning what to buy in early October while doing research about all the products that they are interested in. In this case, they don't miss any good deal. So, if you are also planning to enjoy the discount of shuangshiyi,do your "homework" in advance.

Where to buy?

Live-streaming e-commerce has received lighting speed growth from the stay-at-home economy which accelerated by the outbreak of COVID-19. In this year's Double 11, live-streaming is playing a more significant role in the whole sales process than ever before. About 400 companies and 300 celebrities will hold individual livestreaming sessions on Taobao Live, ranging from luxury goods to daily necessities.

Except Taobao as the main shopping platform, Douyin (Chinese TikTok) is also becoming a popular place for people to watch live-steaming and purchase goods.

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

(Li Jiaqi in his shopping livestream of Taobao)

When we talk about live-streaming in China, we have to mention the Queen and King of Chinese livestream industry: Viya and Li Jiaqi. Both of them started their first live-streaming on October 20 this year as a grand opener for the festival. Together, they generated about 18.8 billion RMB worth of sales in only one night. And this is just the beginning!

All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

How to buy?

To successfully get the goods you want with the best deal on shuangshiyi, you need to know about the purchasing rules, which might be complicated for you if you are a newbie on Taobao.

The whole process has 3 steps:
1) Pay a deposit(定金, dìngjīn)and pay it early (October 20th - 31st)
Early birds usually get more free gifts or better discounts, and some of the products are in limited in amount.
2) Get the coupons of each item(优惠券, yōuhuìquàn)
You can usually get extra coupons through live-streaming.
3) Pay the balance(尾款, wěikuǎn)(November 1st - 3rd)
Early payment (at midnight) is also encouraged as you might receive extra gifts.
All You Need to Know About shuangshiyi - Double 11

There is a joke on Chinese internet saying that understanding the preferential policy of shuangshiyi is sometimes even more difficult than working out a math problem

(People shopping on Double 11 are like...)

All in all, shuangshiyi is a triple-win. By bringing customers, companies and online shopping platforms together, it has created a brand new form of business mode and it offers all sides benefits. As a result, you can see it has been keeping booming for over a decade now in China.

I hope this post will help you know more about shuangshiyi.

Stay tuned!
If you want to study mandarin in shanghai or learn Chinese in suzhou, silk mandarin is a good choice.

2022-07-13T11:12:59+0900 http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/1rEYHGz0SAG silkmandarin http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/1rEYHGz0SAG#comments http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/1rEYHGz0SAG 3 Facts That You Must Know For Your Chinese Learning in 2022(2022年07月20日)
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/3-facts-that-you-must-know-for-your-chinese-learning-in-2022.html

As a Chinese teacher in Silk Mandarin I once believed that most expats in China were already learning Chinese. Surprisingly, however, I was told by some students recently that many of their friends have never tried to learn Chinese after living in China for such a long time!

It's 2022 now - do you still believe in the old expat rumour that "learning Chinese is very difficult (or even impossible)?"

I'm writing this article to tell you that things have changed.

3 Facts That You Must Know For Your Chinese Learning in 2022

Many people thought that Chinese was difficult to master and this was mainly because of the old communication gap between China and the rest of the world. People in the past didn't know much about China, not to mention understanding how the Chinese language works! But after accumulating many years' of teaching experience, Silk Mandarin is confident to say that learning Chinese never is a dreary and hopeless job! Instead, once you unlock the principle, you can't help yourself falling in love with this captivating language.

I will explain to you how we "simplify" Chinese learning following next 3 aspects:

1

Slow Motion Technique

A ground breaking way to learn Chinese grammar

We have many students coming to us saying that they still can't speak in Chinese even though they remember all the words. They simply find it too hard to put the words into the right order and make a proper sentence, and this literally stops them from talking. Yes, they say there are too many grammar rules to remember, and no logic which helps them to see the bigger picture. But there is a logic! And we came up with it. It helps you to learn Mandarin with just one rule instead of dozens, and indeed boosts your speaking!
How simple it can be to learn Chinese grammar? Check it out in the video!

See? Just simply follow our one rule and you can start to speak instantly and always get the Chinese word order right!

2

Chinese Characters Are Actually Paper Tigers

Never believe the terrifying talk like "we only need 26 letters to communicate but they need to remember thousands of characters!"

3 Facts That You Must Know For Your Chinese Learning in 2022

First, Chinese characters work completely different from the Latin alphabet. Every character contains meaning. To build a word, we normally just put 2 characters together. With your level getting higher and higher, you will have less and less new characters to learn to make new words.

3 Facts That You Must Know For Your Chinese Learning in 2022

Yes! The growth of your vocabulary is much faster than characters! You can always build new words with characters you already know, which will save you loads of time to advance to a higher level.
Silk has the best intensive chinese language program to help you improve your level of chinese.
I know that at the beginning of character learning, it can be challenging being faced with a bunch of strange stroke-made signs, but once you overcome it with the professional systematic guidance (of course you need to review after class!), you will tremendously benefit from Hanzi skills.
If you want to know how much does it cost to study chinese in china, please contact us.
But how many characters on earth do you need to know to become literate in Chinese?

2022-07-13T11:12:09+0900 http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/KXDzq8jIZQc silkmandarin http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/KXDzq8jIZQc#comments http://pastport.jp/user/silkmandarin/timeline/Silk%20Mandarin/event/KXDzq8jIZQc 5 Chinese Movies that Help to Improve Your Chinese!(2022年07月17日)
https://www.silkmandarin.cn/5-chinese-movies-that-help-to-improve-your-chinese.html

As we all know, there are plenty ways to practice Chinese listening skills: taking Chinese class, speaking to native speakers, watching TV shows...

However, today I would like to recommend you to watch some Chinese movies. You will feel less confused while socializing with Chinese people in daily life. Meanwhile, it can improve your daily chinese.

Also, I know many of you are busy and prefer watching movies compared to TV dramas/shows, so here are the ones for you! Choose the right path to start

Compared to many European languages, Chinese is a special one. If you don't receive the right guidance when you first start to learn the language, you will soon interpret "special" as "difficult", like many do.

Many students have questions like these:

"Should I also learn characters from the beginning?"
"Why can native speakers never understand my pronunciation?"
"How can I learn Chinese grammar more efficiently?"

You should have a clear idea about all these questions before you start this long term "project". Only with the right method will you get the most out of the time you invest. Each step will take you closer to your goal, thus you will always feel motivated and your learning will be more enjoyable, too.

At Silk Mandarin, they provide every student with a professional advice on how to reach their goal together with a practical study plan. If you've had a chance to try learning Mandarin before, take this summer to unlock your Chinese learning journey with them and enrich your life in China!

2. Adjust your learning method when you feel lost
When you first decide to learn Chinese, everything looks exciting. But two months later, you find this seemingly fascinating journey has become a bit difficult and frustrating. Before you know, you lose your motivation and stop your study.

Please remember that there is always a way for you to master the Chinese language. If you feel lost during the learning process, it's time for you to reflect on the problems encountered and adjust your learning method.

But it's never too late to adjust your learning method. Many students have found back their joy of learning using Silk Mandarin's solution.
