イサム・ノグチ「スカルプチュア・トゥー・ビー・フロム・マーズ」

台紙上の砂に描かれた模型。実現はしなかった

ノグチは1933-1937年にかけて公共空間に展示する作品の設計を始めた。この作品は当初は「メモリアル・トゥー・マン」と題され、巨大なアースワークとして発案された。雛形は、砂に描いた抽象的な顔で、これを写真に収めて巨大な作品に見せかけようとした。鼻は長さ1・6kmになる予定で、宇宙から見ると文明生活を営む生物がかつては地球に生存したことを表すことになっていた。
地球の未来に対するノグチの悲観的見方は、ある部分、第二次世界大戦中、日系アメリカ人として経験したことと、原子力兵器の開発から来ている。
