IEEE poe 802.3at appeared in response to the needs of high-power terminals. On the basis of 802.3af compatibility, it provides greater power supply requirements to meet new needs. PSE terminal provides 50 ~ 57V voltage, about 600mA DC power supply. Each port shall be able to provide at least 30W of power, and after 100m Cat-5 cable, at least 25.5w of power should be received by PD terminal.
In order to comply with specification of IEEE poe 802.3at, PoE power consumption on the PD is limited to 12.95w. This is enough to meet the need of the traditional IP phones and webcams. However, with the emergence of dual band access, video phone, PTZ video monitoring system and other high-power applications, 13W power supply obviously can not meet the demand. This limits the application of poe 802.3 at. To overcome the limitation of PoE on power budget and apply it to new applications, IEEE set up a new task group. Our purpose is to seek for a way to improve the power limit of this international power standard. In order to evaluate the possibility of the implementation of IEEE802.3at technically and economically, the IEEE802.3 working group established the research group of PoEPlus in November 2004. Later, the plan of establishing IEEE 802.3at investigation committee was approved in July 2005. The new standard is Power-over-Ethernet Plus (PoEP) IEEE 802.3at. It defines a device with a power requirement higher than 12.95w as Class 4 (this level is described in IEEE 802.3af, but it will be used in the future), which can extend the power level to 25W or higher.
