Fabric Types in Eco-friendly Clothing
1. Overview of Eco friendly clothing fabrics
Eco-friendly clothing is made of Eco friendly fibers for clothing. Eco friendly fabric fibers can be divided into two categories: natural organic fibers and regenerated fibers. Natural fibers are not based on petroleum, but are based on plant or animal fibers. Plant-based natural fibers include cotton, hemp, bamboo, and soybeans; animal-based natural fibers include wool, silk, and cashmere. Regenerated fibers can be natural or plastic. The following sections will detail some of the more common fiber types used to make Eco friendly clothing.
2. Organic cotton fibers
Cotton is a natural plant-based fiber that is now widely used in clothing due to its water absorption, durability and inherent softness. It is comfortable to wear, which is especially suitable for summer or other warm climates. According to the Organic Trade Association, organic cotton fiber is obtained from organic cotton plants grown from non-GMO seeds and grown without the use of toxic synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
3. Bamboo fibers
Bamboo fiber is a plant fiber made from bamboo cellulose, which is a renewable biopolymer. Ecological textiles made of bamboo fibers (such as bamboo fiber clothing) can help keep warm in winter and keep cool in summer. In addition, bamboo fiber also has strong water absorption (actually has more water absorption than cotton), and has natural wrinkle resistance.
Although bamboo fibers are made from natural fibers, the process used to produce this bamboo fiber (and bamboo) fabric is man-made and involves the use of chemicals, such as converting bamboo cellulose into usable fibers for spinning into threads. Therefore, bamboo fiber cannot be proven to be organic. In addition, according to a ruling by the Federal Trade Commission, bamboo clothing must not be labeled with antibacterial or biodegradable labels.
Nevertheless, there are other reasons that make bamboo a sustainable source of fabric fibers: one of the reasons is that it is relatively easy to grow bamboo without the use of pesticides, fertilizers and water for irrigation; another reason is that bamboo grows very fast. Even after harvesting mature bamboo shoots, there is no need to replant afterwards.
However, care needs to be taken to ensure that the water containing the chemicals used in the bamboo processing process is properly treated before it leaves the plants and enters the environment, so that bamboo fiber production has the least impact on the environment.
