The overgrowth of algae can be said to be one of the most common problems faced by a person managing a coral ecological tank. This problem actually happens in all the water tanks, only to varying degrees, from the growth of the golden diatoms on the slightest frontal glass to the entire living stone and the full filiform algae-covered on the soft.
Although excessive algae is a headache for many enthusiasts, there are many treatment methods for solving algae problems, including chemical methods, physical methods and biological methods. The cost and results of each method are also different.
The algae we generally talk about refers to the fine algae, but any type of algae will have the problem of the outbreak and widespread. However, all algae have a common characteristic, and that is their task is to produce more algae. Through the same structure itself, algae cause the deposition of residues and also allows nutrients to be deposited on their own bases and attached objects.
With the exception of calcareous algae (calcium algae) such as CORALINE and CALCAREOUS, when all the algae are removed, the aquarium will become healthier and have fewer problems.
This is because the huge giant algae have the ability to cause the PH value to change, and it can also accumulate residue on its own walking stems and attached objects. Besides, the growth of giant algae in an aquarium, if maintained at a minimum, also looks more natural.
The occurrence of algae
Before algae problems can be effectively eliminated or reduced, we must first understand the causes. In addition, when dealing with these reasons, we must pay attention not to damage the single-cell zooxanthellae and other creatures we want in the aquarium.
The most common cause of algal blooms in coral reef aquariums is overnutrition throughout the system.
This situation began when live rock was put in. The live rock is rich in various nutrients, and then there are new species, food, and sometimes even unwanted substances that have been added to the aquarium. Therefore, from the beginning of the establishment of the coral reef system, we have to do a lot of work to reduce the appearance of residual nutrients in the aquarium, such as blasting algae.
Three major causes of algae production
Among the nutrients that stimulate algae outbreaks are three major reasons: phosphate, nitrate and silicate.
Phosphate and nitrate are contained in the biological material added to the aquarium and are also the final products of animal metabolism.
The most commonly encountered phosphates are in the form of inorganic salts, commonly called orthophosphates; phosphates are also in the form of organic salts, but algae are only used when the concentration of phosphate in the form of inorganic salts is too low.
Nitrate is the most common end product in the nitrogen cycle. In the nitrogen cycle, proteins are metabolized into ammonia, then decomposed by bacteria into nitrite, and finally into nitrate.
Overfeeding is the biggest contribution to orthophosphate and nitrate concentrations. So the first step to reducing the phosphate and nitrate concentration is to "reduce feeding." Most of the plants will be photosynthesis, so we do not need to feed some creatures in large quantities.
The second-largest source of nitrate and phosphate is artificial seawater.
The two methods most commonly used to treat artificial seawater are deionization and reverse osmosis. Both methods are effective, but reverse osmosis cannot reduce the silicate content, which is the source of the golden yellow diatom outbreak. So if our goal is to eliminate fine algae. Deionization is perhaps the most effective way to remove multi-nutrients from artificial seawater. In any case, these practices are just preliminary methods to reduce the growth of fine algae.
The second-largest source of overgrowth of fine algae is the accumulation of debris in the aquarium.
The residue acts as a storage place for phosphate and nitrate because according to long-term observation, the residue will always release the measured concentration of nitrate and phosphate. Before the residue decomposes and releases nutrients to the aquarium, we can easily control this situation by frequently sucking up the residue.
For the same reason, the filter material of the front-filter must be replaced frequently in order to reduce the nutrients decomposed by the waste in the filter.
Using biological methods to control algae
In addition to using chemical methods to control algae growth, biological methods can also be used. Several herbivorous mollusks have excellent performance in eliminating algae.
Gyro and star snail, both of which are excellent in eliminating algae, but also have some shortcomings. The gyro obviously reduces the number of fine algae in leather-like form. Recently, snails, sea urchins, and sea pigs have been used more frequently. In any case, these practices are just preliminary methods to reduce the growth of fine algae.
First, remove the fine algae as physically as possible, whether pulled by hand, rubbed, or brushed.
After this, we have to change into new water without any nutrients. In other words, no matter whether it is artificial seawater or natural seawater, it must not contain testable nitrate and phosphate concentrations.
If algae continue to grow everywhere, we need to take a further approach: we must be more diligent to absorb the residue in the aquarium and replace the filter material in the front-filter, and also reduce the ecological burden in the aquarium.
According to experience, the growth of algae is particularly severe in summer. This may be because the increase in temperature promotes the metabolism of organisms in the aquarium, thus causing more nutrients to be released into the water. In any case, the steps and methods discussed above can help reduce the possibility of algae bursting.
These methods can not only help reduce the available nutrients of algae but also help increase the redox potential and reduce the types of fine algae that can grow: due to the reduction in available nutrients, the condition of the aquarium is closer to the real nature condition so that all creatures in the aquarium have more chances to survive.
