This page is about building an indoor habitat in a fish tank or "fish tank". Most turtle owners keep turtles indoors and use fish tanks specifically designed for fish.
But most people use fish tanks, so this is what we have to discuss. There are a few things to consider when designing a turtle habitat in a tank. Let us look at the most important factors.
The size, shape, and type of tank
When deciding to buy turtle tank, the first and most important thing to consider is whether the water tank can hold water. This may seem silly and obvious, but some reptile tanks are designed for land reptiles (reptiles living on land). If you try to fill the tank with water, they will break and make a mess. So use a container designed to hold water, such as a fish tank. (If you are using a previously used fuel tank, make sure that it does not leak!)
The second thing to consider is the size of the tank
What you must consider is that your turtle will soon grow larger than the original size tank. You will need at least one 15-gallon tank to start raising one hatch, and at least a 20-gallon tank to start raising two. But once their carapace length exceeds 1.5 inches (3.8 cm), you need to build a new habitat for them.
If you can, try to make a fish tank large enough so that when your turtle grows to the maximum, there will be 10 gallons (40 liters) of water per inch (2.4 cm) of the carapace (upper shell). This way, when the turtle grows up, you don't have to buy a bigger fish tank. Such general rules can be called "shell rules".
Also, remember that a 15-gallon tank cannot hold 15-gallon water unless you use the area above. Otherwise, if the sunbathing platform is installed in the water tank, you will lose one-third to half of the water capacity. Because there is too little water in the water tank, the water will soon be contaminated by the turtle's feces and urine, which is unhealthy for your turtle, has a smell, and it is impossible to keep it clean.
Too small a water tank requires more work to keep it clean. Water will be contaminated quickly, and it will become unhealthy and unpleasant. Your turtle does not have enough space to swim in a pond that is too small. If you have more than one turtle, they are more likely to fight.

If you have small turtles and you don't want to wait for them to grow before you upgrade the fish tank, you can first raise a large fish tank and wait for your turtles to grow before using them. When your turtle hatches, make sure to start at a low water level. The turtles' lungs are not well developed, so they need shallow water at a very young age. However, the water should always be deeper than the turtle's width, otherwise, if they are messed up, they may not be able to correct themselves. If they are trapped underwater, they may be drowned. So if you want to build your habitat in a large water tank from the beginning, that's great. Just start with a lower water level and then gradually increase.
The water level of the hatchling is two to three times the width of the turtle shell. Once they have developed lung capacity to deal with deep water, you can gradually increase. This happened quickly. When they can easily swim from the deepest place to the water surface, you can start to raise the water level little by little.
The shape of the tank you choose is also important. When your turtle is very young, a low-profile tank, such as 20 long, may be okay; but for turtles who like deep water, such as colorful turtles and red-eared turtles, it is almost not enough Vertical swimming space. However, for turtles like musk, mud, and Reeves turtles who are not good at swimming, shallower tanks are better and safer.
It is very important that the water in the sink is deeper than the width of the turtle so that if your turtle is overturned in the water, it can stand upright on its own. If your turtle turns over in the water and there is not enough water to turn it over, it may drown. So if your turtle is 5 inches wide, you should have at least 5 inches wide of water in your fish tank.
