1. The development of organic pigments

The proportion of organic pigments used in the coatings industry has been increasing, and currently accounts for about 26% of the color pigments used in coatings. In recent years, with the rapid development of the coatings industry, new coatings have been continuously developed, and the proportion of high-end coatings has increased significantly. The demand for pigments has grown rapidly, and its varieties and properties have put forward more and higher requirements, which provides a good opportunity for the development of the organic pigment industry.

2. The influence of the physical properties of organic pigments on the performance of coatings

The physical properties of organic pigments include density, specific surface area, particle size, crystal form, dispersibility and stability. The density of the organic pigment is 1.0-2.0g/cm3, and the specific surface area is 10-100m2/g; the ideal state of the organic pigment particle should be the primary particle, and its particle size is 0.01-0.05μm. However, due to the extremely high surface energy of such fine particles, strong agglomeration will occur to form aggregates (size of 0.05-0.4μm), and aggregates will still agglomerate to form aggregates (size of 0.1-20μm), so the usual organic pigments The particles are a mixture of aggregates and agglomerates.

The size of the organic pigment particles has a great influence on the color performance of the paint. On the one hand, it will affect the covering power and tinting power of the paint. Within a certain range, the particle size of the pigment increases, and the covering power of the paint increases; when the pigment particles become smaller, the specific surface increases and the tinting power of the paint increases. Pigment particle size also has an impact on the color of the paint. Usually, the particle size is large, the particle size distribution is wide, and the color is dark; on the contrary, the color is bright.

On the other hand, pigment particle size also affects the UV resistance of coatings. When the particles become smaller, the specific surface area increases, the absorbed light energy increases, and the degree of damage also increases, so the paint fades faster.

Pigments with small particle size and low gravity make the coating less prone to stratification and precipitation. However, pigments with small particle size have a large specific surface area and increase the surface energy, which increases the chance of flocculation and roughness of the coating, which is not conducive to grinding and dispersion.

Most organic pigments exist in a crystalline state, and the phenomenon of "isomorphism" is common. The common crystal forms of copper phthalocyanine are Q-type red light blue (such as Pigment Blue 15), which has poor stability. There are three crystal forms, α, β and γ. The α type has no application value, the β type is purple-red, and the γ type is blue-red. When designing the coating formulation, attention should be paid to the rational use of additives and solvents to prevent the transformation of different crystal forms under certain conditions, which will cause the color shift of the coating, and it is difficult to find the color according to the standard plate.
