According to the water quality characteristics of pharmaceutical effluent, physicochemical treatment should be used as the pretreatment or post-treatment process of biochemical treatment. At present, the applied physicochemical treatment methods mainly include coagulation, air flotation, adsorption, ammonia stripping, electrolysis, ion exchange, and membrane separation.

1. Coagulation
Coagulation is a widely used water treatment method at home and abroad. It is widely used in the pretreatment and post-treatment of pharmaceutical effluents, such as aluminum sulfate and poly ferric sulfate used in traditional Chinese medicine effluent. The key to efficient coagulation treatment lies in the proper selection and dosing of coagulants with excellent performance. The results showed that the COD removal rate of effluent by adsorption pretreatment reached 41.1% and the BOD5/COD value was increased.

4. Membrane Separation
Membrane technology includes reverse osmosis membrane, nanofiltration membrane, and fiber membrane, which can recover useful substances and reduce the total discharge of organic matter. The main features of this technology are simple equipment, convenient operation, no phase change, and chemical change, high treatment efficiency, and energy-saving. Juana et al. used a nanofiltration membrane to separate lincomycin effluent and found that the inhibition of lincomycin on microorganisms in the effluent was reduced and lincomycin could be recovered.

5. Electrolysis
This method has the advantages of high efficiency, easy operation, and so on, which has attracted people's attention. At the same time, electrolysis has a good decolorization effect. Li Ying pretreated riboflavin supernatant by electrolysis and the removal rates of COD, SS and chroma reached 71%, 83%, and 67% respectively.
