Metamaterial Lenses May Lead To Changes in Optical Instruments

The lens is an indispensable part of many optical instruments and electronic products. The lens is usually made of glass. However, the glass lens has a certain volume and weight, which often makes the instrument heavy, especially when multiple lenses need to be used.

Metamaterial has always been one of the most advanced projects in photonic crystal research. The essence of metamaterials lies in nano-structures whose size is smaller than the wavelength of light. These structures can block, absorb, enhance and refract photons by different shapes, sizes and arrangements.

However, up to now, metamaterials have not been widely used in the field of optical lenses. The reason (which is also the biggest difference between metamaterial lenses and glass lenses) is that metamaterials are very picky about the "wavelength" of light. In other words, a lens that works well for red light cannot focus green light and vice versa. It takes a lot of trouble to find materials that can be used in the visible range of our naked eyes. Early metamaterials were mainly silicon-based surface plasmon materials.

Recently, an academic paper published in the journal Science proved that the application of metamaterials is only one step away from us. A research team from Harvard University made use of titanium dioxide "nano-bricks" with a height of about 600 nanometers to build a completely flat and paper-thin condenser lens. The main reason for choosing titanium dioxide is that this material has no obvious absorption of visible light. The effective magnification of this metamaterial lens is as high as 170 times, and the resolution of the magnified image is completely comparable to that of the conventional glass lens. This new type of lens may bring revolutionary changes to optical instruments.

However, metamaterial lenses may only be used in instruments using laser and single wavelength electromagnetic waves at present. If one day, the complex wavelength problem is overcome, then all optical instruments will undergo subversive changes. If it is successful, the size and the cost of the optical lens will be greatly reduced. Our understanding of most optical devices at present will also undergo subversive changes.
