"China has realized the localization of large-scale low-temperature refrigeration equipment for liquid hydrogen and liquid helium and is working on low-temperature refrigeration technology in the field of superfluid helium. Such technologies not only contribute to the development of China's new energy industry, especially the hydrogen energy industry, but also solve the problem of lack of helium resources in China." On August 8th, at the first lecture hall of cutting-edge industry technology in 2018, which was held by ZGC Tianhe Technology Transfer Center, the experts at the meeting described the application prospect of low-temperature refrigeration technology as above.

1. Localization of Equipment Technology

Zhang Yanqi, deputy director of Industrial Planning Department of Institute of Physical and Chemical Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that large-scale low-temperature refrigeration equipment technology is a strategic supporting key technology in the industrial field of China. However, for a long time before, many people thought it was just supporting equipment, which was imported directly from abroad. In order to change this situation, the Ministry of Finance deployed the research task of large-scale low-temperature refrigeration equipment technology in 2011.

As the project undertaker, the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed the first 10kW/20K large-scale low-temperature refrigeration equipment. The adiabatic efficiency of the helium turboexpander is ≥70%. The successful research and development of this device indicate that China had the ability to independently design and manufacture large-scale low-temperature refrigeration equipment with liquid hydrogen temperature level, breaking the monopoly of the equipment technology abroad and laying a technical and industrial foundation for the development of large-scale low-temperature helium refrigeration system with liquid helium temperature and even superfluid helium temperature in China.

After that, the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing FULLCRYO Technology Co., Ltd. cooperated to complete the breakthrough in manufacturing technology of large-scale helium cryocooler in liquid helium temperature zone and made the first set of 250W liquid helium cryocooler in China, which passed the expert acceptance in Langfang, Hebei in October 2017. In November of the same year, FULLCRYO signed a commercial procurement contract for the export of 200W/4.5K large helium cryocoolers with Korea National Fusion Research Institute, which marked that the core technology of China's large-scale low-temperature refrigeration system was internationally recognized.

2. Hydrogen Energy Industry

In recent years, the vigorous promotion of the hydrogen energy industry has driven the rapid development of China's large-scale low-temperature refrigeration industry. At present, the global market for low-temperature refrigeration equipment and systems is huge, with a demand of about 500 billion yuan. It is estimated that by 2020, the total domestic large-scale low-temperature refrigeration market is estimated to be 60 billion yuan. There are huge market demands in 20 national-level large-scale scientific projects, long-term nuclear waste disposal, new energy hydrogen liquefaction stations, and helium strategic resource markets in China and they are growing rapidly at a rate of 25%.

In addition, the Outline of National Medium-Term and Long-Term Science and Technology Development Plan (2006 ~ 2020) stipulates that more than ten major scientific projects, such as superconducting Tokamak (artificial small sun), must operate in superfluid helium, liquid helium, and liquid hydrogen low-temperature environment. Therefore, the large-scale low-temperature refrigeration system has become the only means to realize the low-temperature environment in scientific apparatus.

Xiong Lianyou, technical director of FULLCRYO, said "It is foreseeable that the fourth industrial revolution will be triggered by hydrogen energy, quantum information, and transportation systems using hydrogen fuel cells. The low-temperature technological progress we are engaged in is not only the necessary foundation for the development of these three technologies but also accelerates the arrival of the fourth industrial revolution."

Xiong Lianyou believes that future energy and transportation cannot be separated from large-scale low-temperature refrigeration technology. China is vigorously promoting the hydrogen energy industry. The promotion of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles cannot be separated from hydrogen liquefaction. Large-scale low-temperature refrigeration technology is needed for hydrogen liquefaction. The large-scale low-temperature device liquefies hydrogen, and then transports it to the hydrogen refueling station through long-distance, gasifies it in the hydrogen refueling station, and finally supplies it to fuel cell vehicles. "Large-scale low-temperature device technology, especially in the 20K temperature zone, is an indispensable core technology for the development of hydrogen energy industry." Xiong Lianyou said.
