リチャード・セラの「tilted arc」が地裁の決定により撤去される

1981年制作の「tilted arc」

ニューヨーク市の人気のない公共広場を二分する、この錆びたスチール製のカーブを描く壁は、隣のオフィスビルで働く1300人以上の人々の反対にあった。この壁は「彼らにとっての」公共空間を侵害しているー職場に向かうのに邪魔ーと言って撤去を求める署名を集めたのだ。1985年3月にロワーマンハッタンの地裁で公聴会が開かれ、この作品の撤去が決まった。セラの記念碑の破壊は、「理性的にも感情的にも多くの鑑賞者を巻き込もう」という彼の目論見を否定したばかりか、その大きさゆえに今ある場所に残しておくよう主張するサイト・スペシフィック・アートにとっての、弔いの鐘となったのである。
