アナ・メンディエタ「レイプの光景」

メンディエタは同年、自宅アパートの外の歩道に血液をまき、立ち止まってそれを眺める人々の写真を撮った。レディメイドとして彼女が使ったのはそっけないストライプやオブジェではなく、誰もが主観的に反応する素材だったのである。彼女の作業が進展するにつれ、この種の象徴作用がますます大掛かりになっていった。この変化は当時の多くの女性アーティストの特徴である。多くのコンセプチュアル・アートの決め手となっていた遊び心に代わって、声高な説教調が登場したと言っても良い。メンディエタの作品で、対決姿勢のもっとも強いのは（レイプの光景）だった。カレッジの友人がレイプされて殺された事件の後のこと、彼女のアパートに招かれた友人や仲間が見たのは、ウェストから下は裸で血まみれの彼女がテーブルに縛り付けられている光景だった。床には割れた皿やおびただしい血がぶちまけられていた。女性、つまり被害者が、美術のオブジェ、すなわちレディメイドになったのである。これは当時、書店に氾濫していたポルノ写真に代表される、女性をセックス、またはアート・オブジェに変えてしまう男性の権力から、彼女自身の身体とほかの女性たちの身体を奪還する試みだったとも見られる。
