（天声人語）脳死は人の死なのか

004282009年06月20日朝刊1総合00100624文字脳死は人間の死なのか、どうか。臓器移植法の改正をめぐるニュースを読みながら、塔和子さんを思い出した。ハンセン病の療養所から、「生きていること」の意味と輝きを、紡ぎ続けてきた詩人である▼その「領土」という詩は、〈生と同時に 死を産みおとしたことに気付かないで からになった母体は 満足げに離別を見る〉と始まる。人が生まれるとき、死という手形も振り出される。人は、生とともに死にも領有されているのだと、自らになぞらえて詩は続く▼おとといの衆院で、「脳死は人の死」を前提にする法案が通った。成立すれば、海外に頼るしかなかった子どもの移植への道も開く。「人の死」には同意しないが、助かる子の笑顔を思えば……などと悩む人も少なくないだろう▼人の体という「領土」をめぐって、生と死がせめぎ合う。脳死とは、生が最後の陣地を辛うじて守っている状態なのか。それとも、すでに死に占領されてしまったのか。国会議員が多数決で決めることに違和感のある方もおられよう▼法改正の背後には、難病のために生の領土が脅かされている人たちがいる。移植しか手のない人たちだ。死にゆく人があって、救われる命がある。幸と不幸をセットでとらえて判断する難しさを、医学の進歩が突きつけている▼「死とは？」と問われて「モーツァルトが聴けなくなること」と答えたのはアインシュタインだった。人の数だけ死生観がある。束ねるのに十分な議論は尽くされたのだろうか。このあとに続く参院での審議を見守るとする。
