ラ・モンテ・ヤングの出現

バークレー大学音楽院の教授シーモア・シフリンはラ・モンテ・ヤングという大学院生が提出した作曲に狼狽し、わざわざ演奏会をひらいてその曲がいかに折り紙付きの駄作かを思い知らせようとした。その曲の構造は当時の学界の牙城とされたアルノルト・シェーンベルクが唱えていた12音技法｛ミュージック・セリエル｝との決別を意味し、第二に伝統楽器を使いながらこれほど単純な曲は、音楽そのものに疑問を呈するものだ、第三にこの進行は時間の本質事態に注意を向けさせるものだ。ということになった。これは西洋音楽から受け継いだ伝統を拒絶すべき時が来たと思えてならない、その結果だったからだ。音楽の核心は音の振動であり、物語的な順番の問題ではない。時間は経験すべきもので拒むものではない。ジョンケージに出会ってからはヤングの作品には「非音楽的」な音も使われた。このヤングの一件は後の60年代初期のアートの二つの潮流、フルクサスとミニマリズムに大きな影響を与えた。おそらくヤングがコンセプチュアル・アート第一号であろう。ヤングはライヒ、グラス、ライリーにも大きな影響を与えた
