ロバート・スミッソン「スパイラル・ジェティ」制作

「このサイトは、巨大な円を描いて自分自身を取り込んでいくロータリーだ。その回転する空間から「スパイラル・ジェティ」の可能性も出現してくる。その明白な現実性の前では、いかなる観念も概念も、いかなる制度も構造も抽象も持ちこたえられない。サイトとノン・サイトに関する私の論理体系は、曖昧模糊とした状態に陥り、個体も液体もともに解け合っていく。大陸は波の押しよせとともに揺れ動き、湖は岩のごとく動かないように見える。湖畔は太陽に接し、沸き立つ曲線と爆発が燃え立つ紅炎となっていく。湖に崩れ落ちていくものが螺旋の形を映す。分類やカテゴリー分けについて思い悩んでも意味がない。そんなものはないのだ」

スミッソンは当初、塩湖の赤い色が気に入ってこのサイトに引き寄せられた。作品をつくるにあたっては計画を練り、6500トンに及ぶ原材料を運び込まなければならない。そしてこの原材料は螺旋、すなわちマイケル・ハイザーとは違って多次元的な作品としてコイル状に巻き込んでいかなければならない。スミッソンは、当地の神話や生物学、地理学や歴史の諸要素を織り込んでいった。つまり、大陸鉄道が開通し黄金の犬釘が打ち込まれたプロモントリーからほど遠くないグレート・ソルトレイクの周辺ということだが。スミッソンは自作品について論文の中で、その場から貴重な資源を取り出そうとする山師や炭坑夫、石油発掘業者らによって、風景がどれほど荒らされたかを述べている。（spiral jetty)建築現場の近くの荒れ果てた掘っ建て小屋の様子を説明して、スミッソンはこう書いている。「こういった取り留めのない建物を見るにつけ、大きな喜びが湧き上がってくる。人間のつくった制度が次から次へと絶望の淵に捕えられていくことを、この地は証明している」一度廃棄されたものを復活させたり再利用したいという彼の欲求からは、廃墟への寓意を含んだこだわりとエントロピー、即ち全てのものが廃墟へと向かう傾向に魅了されていることが見て取れる。
