臓器移植法改正巡り、作家・渡辺淳一さんら議論 東京でシンポジウム
(2009年06月17日)004442009年06月17日朝刊生活102700519臓器移植法の改正案の採決を前に、脳死や死を法律でどう扱うかをめぐるシンポジウム（東京財団主催）が国会内で開かれた。作家の渡辺淳一氏ら4人のパネリストが国会議員を前に議論した。
渡辺氏は札幌医大を卒業し、整形外科医として勤務していた1968年、同大教授による国内初の心臓移植、いわゆる和田移植に遭遇した。教授は殺人容疑で刑事告発され、不起訴処分となった。
渡辺氏は「画期的な手術で素晴らしいと思っていたが、いろいろ話を聞くうちに脳死判定が甘かったのではと疑問を持った」と振り返った。学内で批判したため、「主任教授にしかられ、大学にいづらくなった」という。
脳死になった人からの臓器移植について定めた臓器移植法の改正について、渡辺氏は、現行法では15歳未満からの臓器提供が認められず、「移植を受けられずに亡くなる子どもがたくさんいるのを救いたい。法律を変えるべきだ」とし、今国会での改正を訴えた。
その上で、「私は脳死を死だと思うが、医学はどこまで進歩するか分からないから、脳死を法律上の死とはっきり決める必要はない」と述べた。
